One thing that can be stated with certainty is that the Earth's 2–3 million species would fare much better without mankind! No animals except our domesticated broilers for meat and milk production need mankind. No other species would certainly miss mankind either if they had the capacity for abstract thinking.
The Entomological Society and the Railway Investigation Älvkarleby–Bomansberget.
In connection with planning for a high-speed rail link Sundsvall–Stockholm, the Railway Board presented its ideas during 1993 for the railway route immediately south of Gävle, the section Bomansberget–Älvkarleby. Two alternatives were placed north of Trösken through Furuvik and Skutskär (UA 1 and 2); one alternative was proposed to run south of Trösken (UVA 4).
The proposals led to extensive discussions among various interested parties. As nature conservation came to be at a disadvantage, in part as a result of insufficient analyses and descriptions in the Railway Board's investigation, we found it necessary to approach politicians and officials to inform them of the high natural values of the Trösken area.
Together with, among others, ornithologists, botanists and the nature conservation society, we met representatives of the Railway Board, the chairman of the environmental committee, opposition councillors in the municipality, and the county governor. As a conclusion to our advocacy work, we organized a very well-attended public meeting at Silvanum in mid-June.
The results of our efforts were not long in coming; the Railway Board postponed its decision on the railway route and conducted supplementary investigations during the summer and autumn, including in the form of a detailed natural history survey. During spring 1994 it is intended to conduct further analyses before the final decision on the location.

En sak som man med säkerhet kan påstå är att jordens 2 - 3 miljoner
arter skulle klara sig mycket bättre utan människan! Inga djur förutom
våra domesticerade brojlers till kött- och mjölkproducenter behöver
människan. Inga andra arter skulle säkert heller sakna människan om
de hade förmågan till abstrakt tänkande.

mycket välbesökt offentligt möte på Silvanum i mitten av juni månad.
Resultatet av våra ansträngningar lät inte vänta på sig; banverket sköt
upp sitt beslut om bansträckning och genomförde under sommaren-hösten
kompletterande utredningar, bl a i form av en fördjupad
naturinventering. Under våren 1994 avser man att göra ytterligare
analyser inför det slutliga beslutet om lokalisering.
