WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE BEETLE?
In the competition regarding the illustrated beetle species in Insectifera vol. 4 1996, no one has yet come up with the correct name. Two proposals have however been received with the correct genus name. Perhaps the illustration did not do the animal full justice, which is why we are giving readers another chance with a better image, a colour photograph.
As further guidance, it may be mentioned that the species has a limited distribution range within the Horn of Africa and that the species is not among the most common within the genus. It occurs rarely illustrated; as far as I know, it has been illustrated in only one work – part 17 in Les Coleopteres du Monde by Vincent Allard.

Unfortunately, the printing of this journal did not permit the beetle to be printed in colour. The light parts in the image are yellowish-brown/orange-coloured.
Two answers with the correct genus, Sternotomis, have been received from Urban Wahlstedt and Rune Videnfalk.
Ulf does not, however, accept this as the correct answer, which is why the competition continues for another issue.
In order to also give buprestid enthusiasts a chance to win the prize, an upcoming issue of Insectifera, a colour photograph is shown of a jewel beetle that is endemic to Crete and which develops in oak. It was described in 1989 by eng. Novak, Vienna. Good luck!

VAD HETER SKALBAGGEN?
I tävlingen om avbildad skalbaggsart i Insectifera årg.4 1996 har ännu ingen kommit fram till
rätt namn. Två förslag har dock inkommit med rätt släktnamn. Måhända gav avbildningen inte
djuret full rättvisa varför vi ger läsarna ytterligare en chans med en bättre bild, färgfoto.
Som ytterligare vägledning kan nämnas att arten har ett begränsat utbredningsområde inom
Afrikas horn och att arten inte tillhör de vanligaste inom släktet. Den förekommer sällan
avbildad, så vitt jag vet har den avbildats endast i ett verk - del 17 i Les Coleopteres du Monde
av Vincent Allard.
